Guess I picked the wrong day to give up the Internet

Well, today was a bad day for the 'net. I woke up this AM and my mail server was down and had apparently been down since about 2AM. I opened a ticket and they finally had things back up and running at about 2PM. 12 hours of down time is hard when it comes to email anymore. Isn't that pathetic?? The excuse my hosting company gave me was "emergency maintenance" on the server housing mail.pepperguy.com. Yeah...I know all about "emergency maintenance." :-)

So...then I get home tonight, and wouldn't you know it, our cable is out...which means my Internet access is out. Through the wonders of NAT, the LAN and the HOSTS file...I'm able to post tonight...seing as how my server is on my network here at home. Unfortunately, my ties to the rest of the world are severed.

TV cable is dead too, so I popped in The Naked Gun and have it on in the background. SO damn funny! I don't know how many times I've seen it, but it makes me laugh every time. I actually remember the very first time I saw this movie. I was a freshman at Miami and I went to see it with Rich Urbanski at the theater in Oxford. It was one of those crowds that laughed as one and applauded when the movie was over. It was a very cool experience. I went back and saw it again the next night and laughed even harder.

On the bright side of the day though, I had my evaluation at work. Things went very well! I do really enjoy what I do and I think I'm pretty good at it. It's always nice to know that the company feels the same way. Plus, I got some good suggestions on how I can be even more efficient and be of more value to the company. "Is it good for the company?" LOL... really though, it was a good evaluation.

You know the best thing about this movie?? Nordberg.

"I'm boiling a roast."

Frank Drebin is feeding Jane some of the meat and she starts to seductively suck his finger, to which he responds, "I've got 9 more."

"It's the same old story, boy finds girl, boy looses girl, girl finds boy, boy forgets girl, boy remembers girl...girl dies in a tragic blimp accident over the Orange Bowl on New Years Day." "Goodyear?" "No....the worst!"

GOD, there are so many great lines in this film. And just one after the other too. My favorite comes near the end though:

"It's a topsy-turvy world Jane, and maybe the problems of two people don't amount to a hill of beans; but this is OUR hill...and these are OUR BEANS!"

Our beans indeed!

Game, blouses!

Oh my GOD! I just saw the funniest sketch on Chapelle's show for about the 4th time I think. It's where Charlie Murphy (Eddie's older brother) tells the story of meeting Prince in the 80's and playing basketball with The Revolution.

Charlie asks Prince for a towel at one point in the game because he's all sweaty and Prince replies, "Why don't you purify yourself in the waters of lake Minnetonka?" The sketch ends with Prince doing a reverse dunk and then hanging on the rim...he lets go with one hand, and then the other and never falls...but just slowly returns to the floor. I'm sure it doesn't translate well to a blog, but it's one of the funniest things ever on television!

Race for the Cure

We did the Race for the Cure again this year. It was a pretty nice morning for the run. 12,500 people ran or walked it this year I guess, up from about 10,000 last year.

It's always a pretty moving event. They have all the survivors wear a pink shirt...there were lots of pink shirts. Plus, they had all the survivors assemble in the shape of a ribbon on 5/3 Field for a photo. Definitely a great cause and a fun run too!

Here are some photos I took...including a secret zoom in on Nora who didn't know I saw her at that point. ;-)

To an Athlete Dying Young...

Today, an 18 year old young man died on his first day of football practice as a walk-on at BGSU. Aaron Robertson was from Sandusky Perkins High School where he was one of the top athletes in the state of Ohio. He dominated in basketball, football and went to state in track in 4 separate events. He was an un-recruited walk on at BGSU and collapsed and died 10 minutes into his first practice. I can only hope that he had realized his dream by joining the BGSU football team...

May God rest his soul and comfort all those who knew and loved him.

TO AN ATHLETE DYING YOUNG

by A.E. Housman

The time you won your town the race
We chaired you through the market-place;
Man and boy stood cheering by,
And home we brought you shoulder-high.

To-day, the road all runners come,
Shoulder high-high we bring you home,
And set you at your threshold down,
Townsman of a stiller town.

Smart lad, to slip betimes away
From fields where glory does not stay
And early though the laurel grows
It whithers quicker than the rose.

Eyes the shady night has shut
Cannot see the record cut,
And silence sounds no worse than cheers
After earth has stopped the ears:

Now you will not swell the rout
of lads that wore their honours out,
Runners whom renown outran
And the name died before the man.

So set, before its echos fade,
The fleet foot on the sill of shade,
And hold to the low lintel up
The still-defended challenge-cup.

And round that early-laurelled head
Will flock to gaze the strengthless dead,
And find unwithered on its curls
The garland briefer than a girl's.

Skeeters

I ran tonight and then upon my return home, I did my customary cool-down-in-the-back-yard-with-a-glass-of-water-and-some-almonds and I got CHOMPED by mosquitos. I counted 8 on me biting at once. Ridiculous! The thing about it is, if I had been out there with a dozen people, I'd have been the only one getting bitten. Mosquitos LOVE me. I don't know why. Maybe I give off lots of CO2 or something. I was sweating like a pig, so maybe they liked the moisture. But even under ideal conditions, if Maryellen and I are sitting outside together, I'll attract the mosquitos and they'll leave her alone. That frustrates me. Bad skeeters....BAD!!

A decade...

I married Maryellen Lee 10 years ago today. :-) I love her more now than I ever thought possible. It hasn't been without its struggles, but every struggle has been worth it and I wouldn't change a thing!!

I love you Maryellen!!

All I will say on here regarding the presidential race

I'm not really that political...at least not on a national scale. I think you can affect more change by being active and supporting the causes you believe in on a local level than you can by voting for one presidential candidate over another, but Moss posted a response to my "Leading Economic Indicators" post and it made me think. I'm glad it did, because I came up with the following response:

Moss, nowhere in my post did I mention voting, nor did I say anything about George W. Bush or the presidential race. It was merely a commentary on the current state of the economy as I see it; BUT since you brought up the presidential race...

Personally, I don't believe serving in Vietnam, getting wounded, and then coming home and testifying about the atrocities of war to Congress necessarily makes you a better Commander-In-Chief. I think it is respectable that John Kerry fought in the war. I do appreciate that he fought for the freedoms that we share as Americans. I appreciate the service of everyone who has done that...including my uncle, my grandpa my dad and you! (no matter how much you hated it) ;-)

I don't think that coming home and testifying against your fellow soldiers while they're still fighting (even if it's a war you don't agree with) is a respectable move, in fact, I find it self-serving, negligent, reckless, and conniving.

I have a neighbor who served in Viet Nam. He was awarded a purple heart for wounds earned in combat from enemy fire...he struggles every day with that war because of the reception he received when he came home...after John Kerry had served his 4 months and then bad-mouthed those who were still over there fighting. Those hearings and that testimony rallied groups of Americans to actually turn AGAINST the very soldiers who were fighting on their behalf. Soldiers returned to people spitting on them in airports as they got off the plane... They were called names, denied jobs and swept under the carpet. These men and women were heroes...they didn't deserve that.

American lives have certainly been lost in Iraq and in Afghanistan; That's the terrible cost of war. I feel awful for every survivor who has lost a loved one fighting for our freedoms. But I take some solace in the fact that they all died doing something they wanted to do. We have a 100% volunteer military. There is no draft. All of our wonderful military forces are there because they made a decision to be there. That's valor...

As for the debt; Yes, $7 trillion is huge, but you know what? The debt has gone up every single year I've been alive. I'm not concerned about who's going to pay for it. Really...I'm not. Is that short-sighted of me? I suppose... I'm just being honest though.

Are we at a lesser or greater risk of terrorist attack than we were on 9/11? I think it's significantly less! And I think it's directly related to going to Iraq and Afghanistan and attacking terrorist cells and nations harboring and supporting terrorist organizations. What if we had done nothing? What if we'd have gone along with the United Nations and just waited....for how long? Until the next attack on our soil? Until the next 3000 Americans got slaughtered? Until France and Germany thought it was a good idea? Neither France nor Germany were attacked on 9/11.

You'll say "What does Iraq have to do with 9/11?" This is what Democrat co-chair of the 9/11 commission, Lee Hamilton, said:

"I must say I have trouble understanding the flak over this. The vice president is saying, I think, that there were connections between al Qaeda and Saddam Hussein's government. We don't disagree with that."

Did Iraq directly plan the attacks on 9/11? No. Are we safer w/o Saddam in power and funneling millions and millions of dollars into terrorist cells? Absolutely!! Did we wipe out the Taliban in Afghanistan? Yes...we did. Did that make us safer? I believe it did. Did it make the citizens of Afghanistan and Iraq safer? You bet... Is the world a safer place because of our actions? I believe it is.

Moss, I always appreciate your views and even more than that, I appreciate your passion about them! I know you're not happy with America and that's too bad. You're an American, you should like living here! You have told me that if Bush gets elected to a second term, you'd move out of the country. I hope it doesn't come to that...

Are you ready??

Well, Saturday is the start of the BGSU Football season. Last year the team finished up the year ranked in the top 25. This year, they get a test right off the bat. Playing #2 Oklahoma in Oklahoma. (Most of you reading this can get the game on ABC regional coverage. In Toledo, OUR ABC affiliate opted to go with the OSU game (gee...there's a surprise) but our FOX affiliate picked it up. The program director of Fox36 is a BGSU Grad and she was excited to be able to bring the game to NW Ohio!

Anyhow...predictions? I've made a prediction for the game and shared it with one person, but I think I'll put it here just to have it on record. Not THAT many people read this anyhow that I'll have to take a LOT of crap if I'm wrong.

BG returns 18 out of 22 starters... Oklahoma is...well, Oklahoma is one of the strongest programs in the HISTORY of NCAA football. They return last year's Heisman Trophy winner at quarterback, for-God's-Sake! Still, if BG can protect their "rookie" quarterback for the first couple series, keep him off his butt until he gets a little confidence and feels his groove, I think it'll be ok.

My heart tells me this:
BG - 40
OK - 30

Will that happen, I really don't know, that's why they play the game. Vegas has BG as 32 point underdogs. If I were a betting man, I'd take that in a second... Even if we get smoked, it won't be by 32 points.

Anyhow...tune in if you can and root for the Falcons!!
